Analyzing Equity in Pediatric Tympanostomy What Is A Tympanostomy? Tympanostomy = Pressure Equalizing Tube Placement This is a surgery done in patients of all ages where a small, hollow cylinder is placed into the eardrum. It is often done in patients who have chronic middle ear infections (otitis media) or infections that have not gotten better with treatment. Can Be Used to Treat: Recurrent Acute Otitis Media (RAOM) Buildup of Fluid (Effusion) Persistent Infections Provides Ventilation and Reduces Pressure Why Is This Topic Important? By the age of 3, more than 8% of children in the US will undergo PET placement, and It is important to note that ~20% will require a second set PET placement rates are not of tubes placed during their equal across different races, lifetime making it an important medical and social issue. Important Key Terms Otitis Media Tympanostomy Tube Health Equality vs. Health Disparity Equity Otitis Media Middle Ear Infection Usually the main reason for tube placement Commonly occurs after a viral or bacterial infection Tympanostomy Tube (TT) Other names: Pressure Equalizing Tube (PET), Ear Tube, Ventilation Tube, Grommet This is ~30 minute procedure where an incision is made in the eardrum, any buildup of fluid is removed, and a small tube is placed to keep the middle ear dry and prevent fluid from accumulating again. Health Equality vs. Equity Equality Equity Equity aims to adjust resources Equality refers to equal access for disadvantaged groups so to healthcare resources for that everyone has a fair and every individual. equal chance of attaining their best health. Health Disparity Disparities are a metric used to measure and describe the differences in health outcomes between different groups. (CDC) These can be related to socioeconomic factors, access to healthcare, quality of care, insurance coverage, etc. Understanding how inequities affect different populations allows us to lead change! Our Goals We hope to compile data through literature reviews that sheds light on any racial disparity that may be present when it comes to pediatric patients receiving pressure equalizing tubes, and how this can affect clinical outcomes.
