AGRICULTURE 111: Plant and Soil Science Soil Science Lecture Learning Outcomes: SOIL SCIENCE MODULE 1 What are the components of soil? Mineral matter, air, and water, along with soil microorganisms and soil organic matter. What are the ideal proportions of soil? 25% air, 25% water, 5% SOM, 45% mineral matter. What are the 3 core properties of soil? Texture, Mineralogy, Soil Organic Matter. What is the difference betweens rocks and minerals? Minerals- solid crystalline material Rocks- naturally occurring mixture composed of 2+ minerals What is mechanical weathering? Breaking down a rock into smaller pieces, without changing its chemical composition. What is biogeochemical weathering? Changes the chemical composition of rocks and minerals. What are the 3 soil separates? Rank them in size from biggest to smallest. Sand, Silt, and Clay Sand 0.2-0.05 mm Silt 0.05-0.002 mm Clay
