Midterm Notes Sinew Channels (Tendo-Muscular Pathways): - Sinew Channels treat pain and external pathogenic factors. - Sinew channels nourish the muscle and skin Lou Connecting: - Can be used to diagnose and treat channel problems based on fullness (pain, heat) or emptiness (stiDness, weakness) The Cyclical Flow of the QI in the Meridians: - The flow of Qi in each circuit begins in a Yin channel on the chest and passes to the interiorly – exteriorly related Yang channel at the hand. o It then ascends along the yang channel to the face where it passes into the Yang channel’s paired Yang channel according to the 6 Channel theory and then descends to the foot where it passes to the interiorly-exteriorly related Yin channel and ascends back to the chest to begin a new circuit. § Example 1: Lung (LU 3am-5am, chest to hand, it starts at LU1 but at LU7 it connects to LI channel) flows as Metal element to Large Instestine (LI 5am-7am, hand to face, it connects at LI4 and go to until LI 20) § Example 2: Chest (Hand Yin: LU, HT, Pericardium) > Hand (Hand Yang: LI, SI, SJ) > Face (Foot Yang: ST, BD, GB) > Foot (Foot Yin: SP, KD, LV) > Chest 12 Divergent Channels: - They are the conduits of Yuan (Original Qi) and Wei Qi (protective energy, immune system) making connection between the deepest and superficial layers of the body The Five Shu Points (Transport Points): 1. Jing-well Points: C, H, S, F (Carly Has Skipped Fr a. Where the Qi of the Channel emerges and begins moving towards the trunk of the body b. Actions & EDects: - Restores consciousness (C) - Clears Heat & Stagnation from the opposite end of the channel (H) - Calms the Spirit (Shen) (S) - Treats fullness below the Heart (F) 2. Ying-spring Points: a. Where the Qi of the Channel starts to gush Located just proximal to the Jing-well points b. Actions & EDects: - Clears heat from the meridian/organ (HM) - EDect on the opposite end of the channel (less than Jing-well) 3. Shu-stream Points: a. Where the Qi of the Channel begins to flourish Located at or near the joints of the extremities (i.e. ankles & wrists) b. Actions & EDects: - Heaviness a/or pain of the joints 4. Jing-river Points: a. Where the Qi of the Channel is pouring abundantly. Located on the forearm and lower leg b. Actions & EDects: - Cough, Dyspnea, Fever & Chills - External pathogenic factors - Disorders of the local tissues (muscles, tendons, bones, joints) - Diseases manifesting in the voice 5. He-sea Points: a. Where the Qi of the Channel enters a deeper level to communicate with its pertaining organ b. Actions & EDects: - Counter flow Qi, diarrhea, skin diseases (mainly hot) 5 Elements on LU and LI: Element Wood Fire Earth Metal Water Shu Point Well Spring Stream River Sea LU 8 ( Yin/Zhang: Horary LU LU 11 LU 10 LU 9 (Tonify) Point) LU 5 radial border of the nail wrist joint on the and the Thenar radial end of the 1 cun Slightly lateral to Location base of eminance of the transverse proximal to the tendon of the of Point the nail hand, midpoint crease LU 9 biceps brachii Element Metal Water Wood Fire Earth Shu Point Well Spring Stream River Sea 1 (Horary Yang/Fu: LI point) 2 (Sedate) 3 5 11 (Tonify) On the radial midway between 0.1 cun radial border of border of the LU 5 and the from the the index finger, index finger, in a lateral Location corner of in a depression depression anatomical epichondyle of of Point the nail of just distal to the proximal to the snuD box the humerus at index metacarpo- head of the the end of the finger phalangeal joint second trasverse cubital metacarpal crease. bone. Xi Cleft Points Theory and Applications: - The Xi Cleft points, also called the accumulation points - They are primarily at or near the joints of the body. - In treatment they are used primarily for acute conditions - Xi- Cleft Points on the Yin channels also treat disorders of the blood Back Shu Points (Yin organs disorder, located on inner Bladder Channel): - Also Called Back Transporting Points, A.E.P. or Associated EDect Point - Used primarily to treat their related organ, especially with chronic conditions. - Located on the inner Bladder Channel (in the back of body) at roughly the same level as their corresponding organ. - Treating imbalances within the Yin organs or disorder of the Zang organs Front Mu Points (Yang organs disorder, located near CHEST/ABDOMEN): - Also called Collecting Points or Alarm Points - Considered more for acute a/or local problems of the organs. (similar to xi cleft points in treating acute conditions) - Located on the chest or abdomen in roughly the same level as their corresponding organ. - Treating imbalances within the Yang organs or disorders of the Fu Organs - Examples of Front Mu Points: LU 1, REN 3, REN 4, REN 5, REN 12, REN 14, REN 17 (I have 5 houses, but I sold the 2nd one, and the 1st one is Luxurious) The Confluent Points of Eight Ordinary Vessels: - These points are where the eight extra meridians meet the twelve regular meridians - They belong to Main Meridians - Most of them are Yuan points (springs at the beginning of a river — that's where the flow originates) and Luo points (where a separate channel splits oD from the main flow and connects with the Yin/Yang paired meridian), located in the area of the wrist and the ankle - These points are indicated for treating diseases of the extraordinary channels and their related regular channels The Four Command Points: - They are individual points that have strong and broad eDects on their related part of the body. - They are used to treat any imbalance in their designated areas from any etiology (hot, cold, excess, deficiency) at any stage (i.e. chronic or acute). - The 4 command points are: o LU 7 – Treats Disorders of Head and back of neck o LI 4 – Treats Disorders of Face and mouth (LI ascends to face and mouth o UB 40 – Treats Disorders of Back (upper and lower) o ST 36 – Disorders of Abdomen Points of the Four Seas: - These points can treat excess or deficiency of Qi, Blood, Food, and Marrow Primary Meridian of the Lung (actions and indications: Rebellion of LU QI, Restoring LU dispersion, nasal disorders, nosebleed, obstruction, edema) - Based on the pathway of the LU meridian, actions and indications can include: o Rebellion of LU QI – coughing, dyspnea, wheezing, asthma, shortness of breath o Restoring the LU dispersion function & Treating nasal disorders including nose bleed and obstruction o Treating edema Notes Lung Method of about the Locations: Actions: Indications: Points Insertion: point 6 cun lateral to midline, I LU 1 – cun inferior Front Mu Transforms Zhong Fu – to LU 2, at Supression Point of phlegm and Middle the level of in the chest the LU clears heat Palace the 1st intercostal space Below the LU 2 – Clears LU pain in lateral YunMen - heat and chest, extremity of Cloud Gate disperses & shoulder the clavicle, 6 cun lateral descends to the LU QI midline, in the hollow of the delto- pectoral triangle Water Clears Point (Son excess or LU 5 point) of deficiency the LU heat of LU LU 6 – All kinds of Perpendicular KongZui - bleed in lung or oblique Maximum (excess or insertion 0.5 to Opening deficiency) 1. 5 cun Benefits Headache head and and nape of stiDness at LU 7 – Heavenly neck; Opens nape of Lieque Star Point and neck; One regulates sided Conception headache Vessel Perpendicular 1 cun Metal or oblique proximal to Point proximal LU 8 – LU 9 on a line (Horary insertion 0.3 to JingQu connecting Point) of 0.5 Cun *Avoid LU 9 with LU the LU hitting the 6 radial artery At the wrist Shu joint on the stream radial end of point; Method: the Earth Perpendicular transverse Regulates Point or oblique LU 9 – crease and (Mother insertion 0.3 to Taiyuan between the harmonizes Point) of 0.5 Cun *Avoid radial artery 100 vessels the LU; hitting the and the Hui Radial Artery tendon of the Meeting Abductor Point of Pollicis the Longus Vessels Tendon, level with HT 7 Fire point Dry throat; LU 10 – YuJi Clears LU of LU Loss of Lu heat channel voice Wood LU 11 – Point of Clears heat; Lesser LU Benefits Mania Shang – Channel; throat Shaoshang Ghost Point Large Notes Method of Intestine about the Locations: Actions: Indications: Insertion: Points point On the dorsal aspect of the index finger, at the junction of Metal the lines drawn Reduces Method: LI 1 – painful Point along the radial swelling Puncture Shangyang throat, (Horary boarder and and perpendicular - Metal Toothache Point) of LI base of the alleviates 0.1 – 0.2 cun Yang of lower jaw Channel finger nail, pain Prick to bleed approximately 0.1 cun from the corner of the nail LI 2 – Erjian Water – Second point; Son Space Point of LI Heaviness of the body LI 3- San and pain of Expels Jian - Shu Wood joints; wind and Stream point of LI DiDiculty in heat point flexing and extending the fingers On the dorsum of the hand at Command the midpoint of LI 4- HeGu Point, the second - Joining Heavenly metacarpal Valley Star Point bone, close to the radial border. The Conception Vessel Primary Pathway – 24 points: - The Conception Vessel Primary Pathway – Ren Channel or CV Meridian - Conception Vessel is one of the eight extraordinary vessels, along with the Governing vessels, it has its own points. - The Conception and Governing vessels are included with the 12 primary meridians which make a total of 14 meridians. - Arises below CV 3 (ZhongJi) in the uterus in females and the lower abdomen in males and emerges at CV 1 (HuiYin) Actions of the Conception Vessel: - Treat disorders of the Local area - Points Below the Umbilicus: o Treat disorders of urination, defecation, genital diseases, uterine and menstrual diseases. - Points at and above the Umbilicus: o CV 8 and CV 9 treat disorders of the intestines and abdomen; From CV 10 up to CV 21, all the points treat stagnation and rebellion of ST QI - The lower abdomen is the Dantian region, residence of the deepest energies of the body: o CV 4, CV 6 and CV 8 are also the most tonifying points of the body and are able to rescue collapsed Yang and restore consciousness in cases of Yang collapse o It is important to note that though the Conception Vessel ascends along the midline of the abdomen and chest, most of the conception vessel points in these regions have a strong descending action, especially the lung and stomach functions.
