# Acknowledgments I would first like to thank all the people around the world who have supported me and my cause. I am grateful for every message and prayer I have received. I am blessed to have been born to parents who respect freedom of thought and expression for everyone. My family is with me every step of the way. My father encouraged me to follow my dream of speaking out for peace and education, and my mother supported us both in this campaign. And my brothers, Khushal and Atal, remind me every day that even though the world knows me now, I am still just their big sister. I feel honored that I had great teachers and studied in a very good school in Swat. I am and will always be thankful to my teachers for their efforts to spread knowledge and to teach children how to discover talents within themselves and to explore the world. In my new home, I am fortunate to attend the very organized and nice Edgbaston High School for Girls and to have found such a supportive community. All the teachers (especially headmistress Dr. Weeks) and students have made me feel welcome, and I no longer feel like the confused new girl all the time. I was treated in very good hospitals in Pakistan and England, and am forever grateful to the doctors and nurses who cared for me. I enjoyed being the patient patient. I am lucky that I also have an amazing best friend, Moniba. She always guided me to believe in myself and never lose hope. To be able to share my story is another blessing. Writing a book is a challenging task, and I have many people to thank for helping me through the process: - Karolina Sutton, my literary agent, takes care with every aspect of the publishing process and always has my best interests at heart. - I would not have met Karolina if it wasn't for Shiza Shahid. Shiza also helped to set up the Malala Fund and works every day to deliver our message and grow our campaign for education for everyone. - Patricia McCormick worked with me to tell my story in a new way, and I am grateful for her patience and compassion—and the yoga lesson! - I am thankful to Farrin Jacobs for her hard work in editing. Even though her name isn't written on the book jacket, she did a lot of the work. She made me work hard, but was always working right along with me. - This memoir would certainly not exist without the book written with Christina Lamb. We have relied on her extensive reporting and research, and I will always be thankful to her for helping me to turn my words into a complete story. - And nothing would have been done if not for the incredible support that Shahida Choudhry provides to me and my family. Many other people contributed in many different ways, including: - Fiona Kennedy and her team at Orion, my UK publisher; - Megan Tingley and Sasha Illingworth and the rest of the team at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers; Megan Smith, Lynn Taliento, Eason Jordan, Meighan Stone, PJ Kadzik, Jahan Zeb Khan, and everyone at the Malala Fund; Norah Perkins, Hinna Yusuf, Ahmad Shah, Mark Tucker, and Tanya Malott; and of course James Lundie and Laura Crooks from Edelman, who have given me and my family tremendous support throughout our new journey. - And thank you, finally, to anyone who reads my story and finds hope and inspiration in its pages. My journey has not always been easy, but I have always believed that truth and goodness will prevail and am thankful above all to be able to speak for those who cannot. Thank you.
