Achieving Sustainable Development POLS 2401: Global Issues Fall 2023 Georgia State University Sustainable Development • What is it? • Multiple definitions • Progress that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs Sustainable Development • Other definitions: • Its possible to achieve sound environmental planning without sacrificing economic and social improvements • Protection and conservation of living and non-living resources • Focus on development • Preserving bio-diversity Sustainable Development • Three elements to build sustainable development: • 1. Economic growth • 2. Natural resource and environmental conservation • 3. Social Development Sustainable Development • Realization that our ecosystem is vital to our survival • Changes in our ecosystem can disrupt the economy and overall society • Developed vs. Developing world • When it comes to Sustainable Development there is a big gap in the way that developed and developing countries talk about Climate Change and they way that it affects these countries. First and foremost, developed countries currently recognize that Climate Change poses an existential threat to the social and economic well-being of all individuals currently on Earth; however, there is a disagreement in the way that Climate Change should be handled. Developed countries want to move towards more environmentally friendly means of production, encouraging developing countries to move away from means of production polluting the environment. At the same time, developing countries also raise the fact that today’s developed countries became wealthy by polluting the environment for hundreds of years. Simply, by encouraging developing countries to curb their industrialization, developed countries are essentially limiting development. • Notably, Climate Change is also affecting developed and developing countries in different ways. Developing countries are at the forefront of climate disasters and many of them are unable to combat rising sea-levels and prolonged droughts due to Climate Change. Although developed countries are also seeing some of the consequences of Climate Change, they are able to handle recoveries and relief for their citizens. The Green Revolution • A technological transfers from developed countries to developing countries beginning in the 1960s in the agricultural sector. • Result: increased the agricultural output of developing countries The United Nations, the Environment, and Sustainable Development • Stockholm Conference (1972) • United nations Environmental Programme • The Brundtland Commission Earth Summit (1992) • Global action for sustainable development • Outcome: • Agenda 21 – clear international consensus on the issues affecting the long-term sustainable development of humanity World Summit on Sustainable Development • 2002 • Goals: • Overcome obstacles of achieving sustainable development • Generate initiatives that would deliver results and improve people’s lives while protecting the environment Rio+20 • 2012 • Goals: • Establish commitment from the international community on sustainable development • Assess progress data • Address new and emerging challenges facing development and the environment • Establish institutional framework on development Green Economy • What is it? • A green economy is seen as one whose growth in income and employment is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Green Economy • How to go about it? • Global cooperation driven by private and public investment • Commitment to reducing carbon emissions and pollution • Commitment to enhancing clean energy • Commitment to protecting biodiversity
