# Worldwide Armed Violence **4.1 Worldwide armed violence** **Battle Field:** where, why and how * If at least 25 people die in a conflict in a year, this is common in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Islamic world. Conflicts arise where one group of people exerts power over another group that doesn't want that. **Conflicts are classified as:** * **International conflicts:** Take place between countries (like WWII). * **Internal conflicts (or civil wars):** Remain within the borders. * **Internationalized conflicts:** Originate internally but are caused by insurgents who fight against the government, and quickly become subject to international intervention. * **Terrorism:** Violence used to achieve a political goal. **Peaceful Protests:** * Protests against a president (e.g., President Assad in Syria) can be crushed by the army. Numerous countries may support warring parties involved in the conflict. Military involvement may internationalize conflict. **How a State is Defined:** * A state is an area with a border. * Within a state, there are laws and rules that people must obey. * A state has the right to sovereignty (self-determination). * A state has the power to exercise control over its domestic affairs, and other states have no right to interfere. * People within a state may feel a sense of belonging to it due to shared language, beliefs, and history. **Discussion of Borders:** * Borders are created by those in power. * Borders sometimes run through residential areas or between hostile nations. Conflicts can arise among nations due to subordination or central authority suppression. * There are around 5000 nations and 200 states.
