Vehicle suspension systems have made huge technological advances over the past decades. However, these traditional systems still lack some key features when it came to the design of a vehicle capable of exploring new planets with unknown and harsh terrain. One of the obstacles is creating a vehicle that can climb. Load distribution is also vital to avoid sinking in soft terrain such as sand. In the late 1990s, a rocker-bogie suspension system was developed to overcome these issues. One of the key features of this system is having six wheels which gives excellent weight distribution on rough terrain. You will now look at rocker-bogie mechanisms in detail. You will learn about the different parts and how they function together to provide an effective suspension system. A simple rocker-bogie mechanism is shown in Figure. Rocker bogie Mechanism Rocker. The term "rocker" relates to the rocking motion given by this linkage. Rockers are generally L or U-shaped link arms with three main connections. One end of the rocker is connected to the drive motor. This motor will connect to the drive wheel and make contact with the ground. The other end of the rocker is connected to a bogie using a swivel. The middle of the rocker is connected to the main body or chassis. Climbing Using Roker Bogie Suspension. Connecting Rocker to the Chassis You now understand the operation of a rocker-bogie mechanism. To implement this mechanism on a space rover, one must be attached to each side of the chassis. We know the rocker must swivel to allow the suspension to move up and down over terrain. Figure 1.2.45 shows a rocker- bogie mechanism attached to a space rover chassis on a swivel joint. Keywords & STREAM Focus Lifting Mechanism in Robotics Most space rovers must be capable of collecting samples on their trips to planets. Therefore, a Lifting mechanism or a robotic arm is a common attachment to a spacer rover. Before we look at the different types of lifting mechanisms, it is important we look at degrees of freedom. This is the mechanism's ability to move in a direction. The motion capabilities of a lifting system are first defined by its degrees of freedom or DOF. If a system has many degrees of freedom, it can move in many directions. Moving right and left is one degree of freedom and up and down is another. If the system goes left/right and up/down, it is said to have two degrees of freedom.
