# Idol at Copan The Copan site is renowned for its impressive series of portrait stelae, predominantly positioned along the city's central plaza pathways and adjacent acropolis (a complex of layered pyramids, plazas, and palaces). The stelae and architectural decorations of Copán exemplify some of the finest surviving artistry of ancient Mesoamerica. Many structures are elaborately adorned with stone sculptures, typically crafted from a mosaic of carved stones, manageable in size for a single person to carry. This stone statue, exceeding three meters in height, dates back to approximately AD 720. It is believed to be a representation of Copan's prominent ruler, King Waxaklajun Ub'aah K'awiil, portrayed in the guise of a maize deity. # Pyramidal Building and Fragments of Sculpture at Copan The sculptures' remains were not discovered precisely in front of the pyramid. However, Catherwood produced additional drawings in London, leveraging sketches he'd previously made to create new artwork compositions.
