# Women and Children's Rights **Lesson 2** Women constitute half of society and have very important roles in life, with abilities to excel in many business types; their roles are no different from men. In the modern era, institutions advocating for women's rights have increased. These institutions reject discrimination, violence, and abuses of basic human rights, existing for many years in many societies globally. In the early 20th century, there was a growing global interest in women's rights. During this period, women gained some of their rights. The United Nations Charter declared and reinforced respect for basic human rights and freedoms, without discrimination based on gender, language, or religion, and made no differentiation between men and women.
