# Pedigrees! **Definition**: A pedigree is a diagram that shows the phenotype of individuals of multiple generations of a family. **Shapes**: * Squares represent males. * Circles represent females. * If an individual has a trait, it's shaded. **Lines & Brackets**: * A horizontal line connecting a male and a female represents marriage. * A vertical line and brackets connect parents to their children. * Some pedigrees represent heterozygous people with shading/half-shaded shapes **Geneticists**: If geneticists know that a trait is dominant, all the family that lack the trait are homozygous recessive. If parents express the trait, but at least one of their children does not, the parents must be heterozygous for the trait.
