Here's the requested markdown: ## Chapter 4 - The function of relation ### 4.2 The ears The ears are organs that contain the sensory receptors that contribute to hearing. They also contribute to balance. ### Anatomy of the ear: 1. **Pavillon:** the only visible part of the ear. It has the shape of a funnel. 2. **Auditory canal:** a canal with a length of about 2.5 cm. It is lined with hairs and glands that secrete sebum, which prevents foreign bodies from entering the ear. 3. **Tympanum:** a thin, flexible membrane. 4. **Ossicles:** small bones located in a cavity of the skull. 5. **Eustachian tube:** the canal that connects the middle ear to the pharynx (throat). 6. **Vestibule:** organ connecting the semicircular canals with the cochlea. 7. **Cochlea:** (or snail): the organ filled with liquid. Its walls are covered with vibrating cilia. It contains auditory nerve cells lined by nerve fibers. 8. **Auditory nerve:** formed by axons of auditory cells. 9. **Semicircular canals:** these three canals form some of the auditory system. They are connected to liquid.
