# MODULE 1: KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING ONESELF DURING MIDDLE AND LATE ADOLESCENCE ## SELF-CONCEPT Your ideal self is the self you aspire to be, possessing characteristics similar to a mentor or role model. Your actual self is the self you currently see, with characteristics you’ve been nurtured or born with. The actual self and ideal self are two broad categories of self-concept. Self-concept is your awareness of yourself, encompassing the identification of the ideal self separate from others and the behaviors you undertake to reach it using your actual self. **Self-knowledge:** Self-knowledge is derived from social interactions, providing insight into how others react to you. This forms your self-image, the representation of how you think, feel, act, and appear to others. **Ideal Self:** The ideal self is the idealized image of who you want to be. It's based on learned experiences, including parental teachings, admired qualities in others, and societal values. **Negotiation and Alignment:** There's a negotiation process between the ideal and actual self, exemplified in social roles from infancy to adulthood. Alignment between the ideal and actual self leads to well-being, while misalignment creates mental distress. The greater the disparity, the greater the distress. Personal development aims for greater self-knowledge to improve alignment. ## PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS Personal effectiveness is utilizing all resources (talents, skills, energy, time) to achieve goals. Self-awareness, utilizing strengths, learning new skills, and behavioral flexibility are key to improving personal performance. **Development of Skills:** * **Talents:** Identifying talents and developing them for specific subject areas (e.g., science, literature, sports). * **Experience:** Acquiring knowledge and skills through cognitive and practical activities. * **Knowledge:** Essential for setting goals, action planning, and risk assessment; skills and actions must align with plans. * **Skills:** If skills are repeatedly used in a specific situation, they become automatic, subconscious habits. **Key Skills for Efficiency:** 1. **Determination:** Focusing on specific goals, overcoming distractions and desires. 2. **Self-confidence:** Growing from self-awareness of actions/consequences, leading to confidence in appearance and abilities. 3. **Persistence:** Continuing through obstacles and challenges. 4. **Stress Management:** Coping with daily stresses arising from uncertainty or unknown situations. 5. **Problem-solving:** Using new approaches to achieve goals when facing inexperience. 6. **Creativity:** Finding unique ways to act or complete tasks. 7. **Idea Generation:** Employing new, original, and unconventional ideas.
