During this time, Filipinos faced hardship, economic challenges, and political change. ## Policies Implemented by the Japanese * **Severed ties with the United States:** Complete disengagement from the United States. * **Eliminated American influence:** All American authority in the Philippines was removed. * **Puppet Filipino Government:** A Filipino government was established, but it was ultimately controlled by the Japanese. * **Maintaining power:** Japanese leaders maintained control over all levels of government. * **Suppression of freedoms:** Freedom of speech and expression were curtailed and violated. * **Rationing of necessities:** Food and supplies were rationed to control resources. * **Punishment of resistance:** Harsh punishment awaited those who resisted Japanese authority. * **Suppression of economic growth:** Programs supporting economic and social advancements were curtailed. ## Military Rule A Japanese military government was established in January 1942.
