# Basic Power Tool Safety Guidelines **1.1.0 Basic Power Tool Safety Guidelines** Always remember, if not used properly, power tools can be dangerous. Safety guidelines are covered for each power tool in this module, but additional information is crucial for working with power tools, and trainees must complete the Basic Safety module before beginning this module. **1. Safety in the Work Area** - Always read and follow guidelines provided in the power tool's Operating Instructions before attempting to use it. - Confirm you have the correct power tool for the job. - Make sure the tool has been disconnected from its energy source when not in use and before performing maintenance or replacing parts (e.g., blades, discs). - Inspect power tools, including cords and hoses, for damage. - Report any damaged tools to your supervisor. - Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required, including safety glasses and gloves, and tight-fitting clothing should not be worn (as it could be caught in the mechanism), and safety shoes. - Keep other workers who aren't directly involved with the work at a safe distance. **2. Power Tool Trigger Lock** A trigger lock is a small lever (switch) or part that catches or springs to hold the power tool trigger in the operating mode even when the trigger is released. Locking a power tool in the On position can be very dangerous. **3. Power Tool Usage Safety** - Never carry an electric or pneumatic tool by its cord or hose. A trigger lock should not be used. - Do not allow yourself to be distracted while using a power tool. If you are distracted or interrupted during operation, turn it off. -Never use electric power tools in wet conditions unless they are approved for wet conditions. **Additional Considerations** - Tools must be properly plugged into grounded receptacles. - Always ensure the power tool is in the Off position before plugging in. - If the power tool is equipped for it, use a trigger lock to prevent accidental activation. * Always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) or devices such as safety glasses, gloves, and face shields, and appropriate footwear, as required for the power tool. * Never pour power type tools into electrical receptacles (e.g., for lubricating purposes)
