# The Crisis of the Late Middle Ages The population of Europe grew from 48 million in the 11th century to 73 million in the 13th century, thanks to increased agricultural production. However, in the 14th century, life in Europe began to worsen due to wars, epidemics, poor harvests, and a change in climate. All of this led to a decrease in food production. Previously, land was mainly used to grow grains, but during times of prosperity, more profitable crops like wine and flax were cultivated. Eventually, there wasn't enough food for everyone, which caused widespread famines.
