# Human Settlement and Economic Activities This is a lesson about how geographical features influence human settlements and economic practices. ## What is a Settlement? Early settlements developed when hunter-gatherers started agriculture. Settlements are places where people live. They come in different types and sizes: small settlements like villages, and larger settlements like cities, often found in rural and urban areas respectively. ## Settlement Patterns Settlements follow patterns based on population distribution. Placement is determined by various factors including natural features and human interactions with the environment. Understanding these patterns helps us better understand the world. ## Key Words * **Rural:** relating to the countryside rather than the town. * **Urban:** relating to a town or city. * **Settlement Pattern:** the way houses are laid out (closely together to access resources, etc.). * **Density of Population:** a measurement of population per unit area (e.g., inhabitant/square kilometer). * **Constraint:** a limitation or restriction. ## Settlement Types The lesson discusses the different types of settlements, including: * **Nucleated:** Settlements clustered together. * **Linear:** Settlements arranged in a line, along a river or road. * **Dispersed:** Settlements spread out over a large area. ## Relating Words to Settlement Patterns The lesson asks students to relate the following words to the settlement patterns: * **Low density of population:** this pattern is frequently seen along a river bank where the population is densely populated. The image displays diagrams of these different settlement patterns.
