Understanding these patterns helps us better understand the world. ## Key Words * **Rural:** relating to the countryside rather than the town. * **Urban:** relating to a town or city. * **Settlement Pattern:** the way houses are laid out (closely together to access resources, etc.). * **Density of Population:** a measurement of population per unit area (e.g., inhabitant/square kilometer). * **Constraint:** a limitation or restriction. ## Settlement Types The lesson discusses the different types of settlements, including: * **Nucleated:** Settlements clustered together. * **Linear:** Settlements arranged in a line, along a river or road. * **Dispersed:** Settlements spread out over a large area. ## Relating Words to Settlement Patterns The lesson asks students to relate the following words to the settlement patterns: * **Low density of population:** this pattern is frequently seen along a river bank where the population is densely populated.
