# Breastfeeding **Patient education:** * Breastfeeding moms: * Feed infant when alert and hungry, not frantic. * Avoid pacifier use until breastfeeding is established. * Ensure a good latch from the beginning (poor latch can lead to mastitis). * Noisy sucking or dimpled cheeks indicate a poor latch. * Formula feeding moms: * Avoid stimulation of the breast. * Avoid warm water on the breasts. * Do not pump. * Wear a supportive bra. # Mastitis **Signs and symptoms:** * Redness and heat in the breast. * Tenderness. * Edema and heaviness in the breast. * Purulent drainage (may or may not be present). **Usually 2-3 weeks after birth.** **Treatment/nursing care:** * Mild analgesics for comfort. * Continue breastfeeding or pumping. * A heat pack can be applied, warm shower. * Nurse first on the unaffected side. * Expose nipples to air when possible. * Maintain cleanliness, frequent breast pad changing.
