# White Blood Cells (WBCs) **What are white blood cells?** * Make up less than 1% of our blood. * Their role is to defend us against infection, such as bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms that can cause disease. **How do they defend us against pathogens?** * **Phagocytosis:** A process where a white blood cell engulfs or consumes a microorganism. * **Antibodies:** White blood cells produce antibodies which combine with pathogens and help destroy them. * **Antitoxins:** White blood cells produce antitoxins. These neutralize toxins from other pathogens. **Additional information:** * White blood cells have a nucleus.
