# Pharmacology **SLOs:** After completing this lesson, the student will be able to: * Define Pharmacology * Define the term "drug" * Enlist the various sources of drugs * Describe the principle usages of painkillers, antibiotics, vaccines and sedatives. * State the contributions of Joseph Lister in the discovery of antiseptics * State the contributions of Alexander Fleming in the discovery of penicillin. * Categorize and describe the effects of addictive drugs * Define hallucinogen * Define narcotics * State the associated problems of drug addictions * Identify the symptoms of addiction * Name different plants used for hallucinogens and narcotics * Categorize sulfonamides, tetracyclines and cephalosporins * Categorize major antibiotics * Rationalize the resistance developed in bacteria against antibiotics * Describe the role of vaccines **Definition of Drugs and Pharmacology** * Study of drugs is called pharmacology. * Any substance that alters normal body function is called a drug. * Drugs are generally categorized into two types: medicinal and addictive. **Medicinal Drugs:** * Used to diagnose, treat, or prevent diseases (e.g., antibiotics, vaccines, etc.) **Addictive Drugs:** * Make a person dependent on them in harmful ways (e.g., morphine, heroin) **Sources of Drugs:** 1. **Drugs from Animals:** Glandular products of animals (e.g., fish liver oil, bees wax, etc.)
