# Slime Supreme! This article is about slime and its properties. ## Slime in Space In May 2020, NASA astronauts brought slime on board the International Space Station (ISS). They tested how it behaved in microgravity. It floated in a large perfect sphere. When they spun the sphere, it would stretch into an oblong shape, like a flattened disc! ## Mighty Mucus Humans make a natural version of slime called mucus. Mucus protects our bodies: * **Eyes:** Keeps them moist and clear of dust, pollen, and other particles. * **Nose and Sinuses:** Prevents these passages from drying out and captures bacteria and pollen. * **Mouth and Throat:** Keeps things moving smoothly. * **Lungs:** Keeps these organs moist and healthy. * **Intestines:** Allows food particles to smoothly pass through. * **Stomach:** Protects the stomach lining from acid. ## Animals Use Slime, Too! Many animals also use slime: * **Snails and Slugs:** Use slime trails to communicate and find mates. * **Sleepy Parrotfish:** Blow mucus bubbles to safely sleep * **Velvet Worms:** Spray slime at prey to instantly trap them. * **Hagfish:** Spray a protein called mucin, which becomes a thick slime when it hits seawater. * **Aquatic Limpets:** Use slime trails to find their way home. ## Basic Ingredients A popular recipe for homemade slime uses a combination of glue, baking soda, contact lens solution, and water. ## Slime Facts * **High Viscosity:** Although slime is a liquid, it also acts like a solid due to its high viscosity. Slime's viscosity is 20,000 times thicker than water! * **491:** The most people in one place for a slime lesson happened on June 19, 2022, at the Montreal Science Centre. * **10,350 KG (22,817 LB.):** The weight of the world's largest slime, made in 2018 in Austria. This is about the same weight as a garbage truck!
