# Bernoulli's Principle Bernoulli's principle states that an increase in the speed of a fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure or a decrease in the fluid's potential energy. ## How Airplanes Fly ### Bernoulli's Principle Slower moving air = High pressure Faster moving air = Low pressure The shape of an airplane wing is designed so that the air moves faster over the top of the wing than under the wing. Because faster moving air exerts less pressure, the pressure on the top of the wing is less than the pressure on the bottom of the wing. The difference in pressure creates a force that lifts the wing up into the air (LIFT). # venturi effect The Venturi effect is the reduction in fluid pressure that results when a fluid flows through a constricted section (or choke) of a pipe. ### Application: Carburetor A carburetor uses the venturi effect to suck fuel into the engine air stream. Air is forced to speed up as it passes through a narrow part of the tube. As the air speeds up, its pressure drops and it sucks fuel into the air stream.
