# The Brain and Its Structures The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling and coordinating various bodily functions. This document describes different parts of the brain, including their location, function, and connections. **Thalamus:** Two egg-shaped structures, similar to pigeon eggs, that relay and amplify sensory information (except smell). A space between the thalami is called the third ventricle, which is connected to the lateral ventricles through the Monroe Foramen. **Hypothalamus:** A small portion located below the thalamus, controlling autonomic functions like body temperature, hunger, thirst, and sexual behaviour. It's connected to the pituitary gland via a stalk. **Midbrain (Mesencephalon):** Located between the diencephalon and pons, the midbrain facilitates communication between these regions. A central canal connects the third and fourth ventricles within the midbrain (cerebral aqueduct/Sylvius aqueduct) **Four Lobes:** * **Superior Colliculi:** Responsible for visual reflexes. * **Inferior Colliculi:** Responsible for auditory reflexes **Pons:** Located below the midbrain and above the medulla oblongata. Part of the fourth ventricle is visible in its thickness. **Medulla Oblongata:** Extends from the pons downwards into the spinal cord. The lower part of the fourth ventricle is within its thickness. A furrow exists on its anterior surface with pyramidal projections on either side. Olives are located behind the pyramids. Vital functions like heartbeat, breathing, blood vessel constriction/dilation, swallowing, vomiting, coughing, and sneezing are regulated by the medulla oblongata and it contains the crossing point for many nerve pathways. **Cerebellum:** The second largest brain structure, situated in the posterior cranial fossa, below the occipital lobe and behind the pons and medulla.  Its structure includes a median vermis and two hemispheres. It is composed of gray matter (cortex) and white matter internally. The cerebellum is involved in balance, posture, and coordinating movements. It's connected to the midbrain, pons, and medulla via peduncles. **Blood Supply:** The brain's blood supply is provided by the internal carotid and vertebral arteries. **Meninges:** Three layers of protection surrounding the brain: 1. **Dura Mater:** The outermost layer, firmly attached to the skull. Sometimes separated to create venous sinuses, providing passage for cerebral venous blood. 2. **Arachnoid Mater:** The middle layer. 3. **Pia Mater:** The innermost layer, adhering closely to the brain's surface. **Subarachnoid Space:** A space between the arachnoid and pia mater. **Ventricles:** Chambers within the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
