They wanted to create a national government with three branches and shared power between the states. * They disagreed on how states should be represented. * George Washington was chosen as president of the convention. ## Big vs. Small * James Madison introduced the Virginia Plan, which gave more power to larger states. * William Paterson introduced the New Jersey Plan, which called for equal representation. ## The Great Compromise * The coming together of the two plans was the Great Compromise. * The delegates created a bicameral legislature. * One house would be based on state population (House of Representatives). * The other house would have equal representation. ## The 3/5 Compromise * The Northern states opposed slavery, while the Southern states did not. * This compromise determined how slaves would be counted for taxation and representation. * Every five slaves would count as three. ## The Father of the Constitution * James Madison took notes of everything. * He is called the Father of the Constitution.
