# Cats and Dogs ## The Reproductive System of a Female Cat The female cat's reproductive system consists of genital organs including the vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, oviducts, and ovaries. The vulva is the external opening that protects and encloses the vagina. It is identified as a female through external markings. The vagina serves as a passage for sperm and the fetus. The cervix is the opening between the urethra and the vagina, acting as a barrier between the sterile uterus and the outside world during pregnancy. It relaxes at birth to allow the kitten to exit. The uterus is a Y-shaped organ. The horns are the top part and the body forms the bottom part. The uterus extends from the pelvis to the kidneys. A tiny tube connecting the uterus to the ovaries is the oviduct. The oviduct is the site of fertilization. The ovaries, located near the kidneys, contain eggs (ova) waiting to be fertilized. They also produce female hormones. The eggs are released from follicles during ovulation and travel through fallopian tubes to the uterus. ## Reproductive System of Dogs The reproductive organs of male and female puppies are not fully developed at birth. Female puppies' ovaries fully develop after six months of age, with sexual maturity around 9-10 months. Male puppies' testicles are not typically fully descended into the scrotal sac at birth. They are usually located within the abdominal wall muscles.
