Sonorous Able to make a ringing sound when hit. Capable of being hammered or pressed into a new Malleable shape without being likely to break or return to the original shape. A material which allows charge to move easily Conductor through it. The tendency of a substance to undergo a Reactive chemical reaction. Reactivity A list of elements in order of their reactivity, series usually from most reactive to least reactive. Metal, Nonmetals, and Metalloids Metals Differ from Nonmetals Metals tend to form cations. Nonmetals tend to form anions. Metals Most of the elements in nature are metals. Properties of metals: – Shiny luster – Conduct heat and electricity – Malleable and ductile – Solids at room temperature (except mercury) – Form cations easily Metal Chemistry Compounds formed between metals and nonmetals tend to be ionic. Metal oxides tend to be basic and react with acids. (when combined with water gives off a base) Nonmetals Nonmetals are found on the right hand side of the periodic table. Properties of nonmetals include the following: – Solid, liquid, or gas (depends on element) – Solids are dull, brittle, poor conductors – Large electron affinity, so they form anions readily Nonmetal Chemistry Substances containing only nonmetals are molecular compounds. Reactivity Series Chemists can study many different reactions to work out a REACTIVITY SERIES A Reactivity Series is a table of how easily metals react – with the most reactive at the top. All metals ABOVE COPPER in the Reactivity Series will react with acid.
