# Selected Bones of the Skeletal System ## Axial Skeleton The Axial Skeleton consists of the Skull, Hyoid, Auditory ossicles, Vertebral column, and Thorax. ### Skull The Skull is comprised of the Cranium and the Facial bones. **Cranium (Cranial bones)** These bones form the cranial cavity. 1. **Frontal bone** * Orbital margin (Supraorbital margin): The margin that forms the eye opening (of the orbit, or eye). * Frontal sinus 2. **Parietal bones** (*2 bones*) * Sagittal suture * Squamous suture (Squamosal suture) 3. **Occipital bone** * External occipital protuberance * **Lambdoid suture (Lambdoidal suture)** * Foramen magnum * Occipital condyle * Jugular foramen (Jugular canal) 4. **Temporal bones** (*2 bones*) * Mandibular fossa * Squamous portion (Squama) (Temporal squama) * Mastoid process * Petrous portion (contains the auditory ossicles) * External auditory meatus (External acoustic meatus) * Styloid process * Zygomatic process * Squamous suture (Squamosal suture) * Carotid canal (*note: this is not a foramen*) 5. **Sphenoid bone** (*the "keystone of the skull": it articulates with all cranial bones*) * Sella turcica (Hypophyseal fossa) * Optic foramen (Optic canal) * Superior orbital fissure * Sphenoid sinus
