It influences and mirrors people’s everyday engagement in life. It is determined by the interactions between people in their activities: Style of dress The use of slang Greeting rituals The foods the people eat Music, etc. CONT… Popular culture is a mass culture. It is hopelessly commercial culture. It is a mass produces for mass consumption. Its audience is a mass of non discriminating audience. Popular culture consists of the aspects of attitude behaviors, beliefs customs and tastes that define the people of any society. Popular culture is defined as products and forms of expressions and identity that are frequently encountered or widely accepted, commonly liked or approved and characteristic of a particular society at a given time. ELEMENTS OF CULTURE SYMBOL – something else and often evokes various reactions and emotions ex: 3 stars and a sun CONT.. LANGUAGE – a key symbol of any culture CONT NORMS – standards and expectations for behaving. Formal norms called mores and laws, refer to the standards of behavior considered the most important in any society Ex: traffic laws, school rules, community ordinances Informal norms also called folkway and customs refer to standard of behavior that are less important. But still influence how we behave. Ex: Table manners, phone etiquette, public ride manners, public conversation, party etiquette, etc. CONT… RITUALS are established procedures and ceremonies that often mark transitions in the life course. EX: circumcision for boys in the Phillippines, wedding rituals, house warming, wearing of black/white during funeral EXAMPLES OF POP CULTURE Music Print Cyber culture Sports Entertainment Leisure Advertising television FORMATION OF POPUL AR CULTURE Urbanization – key ingredient in the formation of popular culture. The diverse people would come to see themselves as a ‘collectively’ as a result of common, or popular, forms of expression. Industrialization also brought with its mass production; developments in transportation and technology , increased literacy, emergence of efficient forms of commercial printing. All of these contributed to the rise of popular culture. FORMATION OF POPUL AR CULTURE In the 20th century, the print industry mass- produced illustrated newspapers and periodicals, as well as serialized novels and detective stories. Films, broadcast radio and television all had profound influence on culture. SO urbanization, industrialization , the mass media and the continuous growth in technology since 1700s, have been significant factors in the formation of pop culture. These continue to be factors shaping pop culture today. ACTIVITY: MAKE A COLL AGE OF PHOTOS OF ICONS/READINGS/FOOD/ETC THAT YOU LIKED MOST. THEN, TELL HOW IT INFLUENCED YOU. I always buy their albums and practice singing their song. So I would become a good singer too. Make a booklet or mini dictionary that contains words that arise in different years.
