# The Circulatory System The circulatory system is a system that transports nutrients and other life-sustaining resources. It is comprised of the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system. The main structure is the heart, which pumps blood around the body. The heart beats about 100,000 times every day, enabling blood to travel to the lungs, then back to the heart, and then throughout the rest of the body. This allows for the exchange of gasses and the delivery of nutrients to cells. Blood is often called the "river of life" due to its role in these essential functions. Ants, as shown in Figure 1, also cooperate to transport food to their colony. # Academic Vocabulary **Synonyms for *contracts***: squeezes, flexes, tightens, constricts. # Figure 1 The figure (that isn't shown here but is referred to) shows ants transporting food. This is analogous the circulatory system transporting materials in a body.
