# Cell Division **DEFINITIONS** * **Cell division:** The process of forming new cells (daughter cells) from a parent cell. * **Chromosome:** A rod-like structure containing DNA, which is the genetic material. * **Mitosis:** A cell division process resulting in daughter nuclei with the same number of chromosomes as the original nucleus. * **Meiosis:** A cell division process resulting in daughter nuclei with half the amount of chromosomes as the original nucleus. **INTERPHASE AND PHASES OF MITOSIS** * **Interphase:** * **Phase 1: Prophase** * **Phase 2: Metaphase** * **Phase 3: Anaphase** * **Phase 4: Telophase** **Result of mitosis:** Identical cells with the same genetic material as the parent cell. **(Diagram Description):** The image shows a circular diagram representing the cell cycle. The cycle starts with an image of an interphase cell, and then the different phases of mitosis are shown subsequently. The phases include prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. Arrows connect successive stages. Each phase is labelled and illustrated with diagrams of the DNA within the cell. The DNA is presented as a set of thin lines in the cell and is labeled in each of the stages. A note on the image says "Identical cells..."
