# Acids and Alkalis Acids and Alkalis are two groups of hazardous substances. They are different from each other, but they are both irritant or corrosive. This means that both acids and alkalis can react with substances (including skin) to produce new substances that dissolve, so it looks as if the acid or alkali is "wearing away" the other substance. To stay safe when handling corrosive chemicals, always wear goggles and wash any spills with plenty of cold water. **Note:** An image of a hazard symbol (likely a corrosive symbol) was present and is omitted from this response.
