# Vice: Cyber Supremacy **Vocabulary** * **Ransomware:** a type of virus-like software that prevents access to a computer until a payment (ransom) is made. * **Scrambling:** moving or acting quickly to find, do, or get something. * **Vulnerable:** able to be attacked, harmed, or damaged. * **Venture capital:** money used to start a new, often risky, business. * **Surveillance:** carefully watching someone. * **Annihilation:** complete destruction; "under constant annihilation threat by other nations." * **Infrastructure:** the basic equipment and structures (buildings, roads, etc.) needed in a society or organization. * **Undertaking:** a task that is sometimes difficult or important. * **Screening:** examining people or things to see if they are suitable for a specific purpose or job. * **Feeder program:** a program, like a school, that promotes the best talent to a more advanced level. * **Sabotage:** to purposefully break something, often for political or military gain. **Other Terms** * **Darknet:** A part of the internet that is not indexed by standard search engines, requiring special software to access. Many illegal activities can occur within this space. * **Breach:** to enter a protected place, as in "hacked emails and data breaches." * **Indisputable:** without question or doubt; "threats to critical infrastructure...are also becoming indisputable." * **Interconnectivity:** the interconnected state of things, particularly computer systems. * **Reservoir:** a large, liquid storage area, often artificial. * **Malware:** software intentionally designed to harm or damage computer systems. * **Theoretical:** related to what is possible or imagined, rather than based on real-world examples. * **Manipulate:** to control something or someone in an exploitative or unfair way. * **Undermine:** to gradually weaken something or someone. * **Prosper:** to be successful, strong, and healthy as a person or society.
