# Caribbean History: Effects of the Haitian Revolution on Haiti ## Social Effects * **Loss of lives:** Thousands of people, including whites, coloureds, and blacks, died in the fighting, were murdered, or were victims of diseases like yellow fever. * **Exodus of whites:** Many whites left the island due to fear of losing their lives and to continue their plantation activities. * **Emancipation of slaves:** Slaves were freed. * **Population decline:** Death and migration led to a decline in the population of Haiti. * **Exacerbated racial tensions:** It exacerbated the poor relations between the Africans and coloureds. ## Economic Effects * **Destruction of cane fields:** Cane fields were destroyed. Enslaved people intentionally destroyed symbols of slavery, including sugarcane fields. Acres of cane fields were set ablaze and destroyed during the revolution. * **Reduced sugar production:** Sugar production fell. Part of the reason for this was the destruction of the cane fields, and also the whites who fled the colony, taking their capital, technology, and skills.
