POAE Midterm Prep Review HOW to study for a midterm exam (3 hour prep, minimum) I suggest you spend at least 3 hours preparing for a mid-term, as follows: Make a one-page study sheet (front and back) Go through all the items listed below and write down the important formulas, concepts, and conversion equations. Go through your notes and write down anything you missed above. Were there any homeworks you didn’t know how to do? Review them. If you want to go above and beyond, go out to the presentations (or videos) and quickly review them to see if you missed anything. Finished? Recopy it in good handwriting so you can read it. Remember to spend more time on the stuff that you don’t completely understand and less time on the stuff you know. Murphy’s Law says the stuff you don’t know well will be the stuff your teachers ask on the tests. WHAT to study for this mid-term. Design Process What do we do in each step of our 6-step design process? For example, why do we do Idea (fast Concept) Sketching in Step 2 (Generate Ideas). Why do we do detailed drawings in Step 3? Because we must build it in Step 4. Etc. How do we create a project in our Engineering Notebook using the design process? Why do we use an Engineering Notebook at all? How should you put notes in it? Statistics What does “significant digits” mean and how do they relate to Precision? How do you manually calculate Mean, Median, Mode? How do you calculate Mean (Average), Mode, Median, and Standard Deviation in Google Sheets? What does Standard Deviation mean and what does a wide standard deviation say about accuracy and precision versus a small standard deviation? What is the difference between accuracy and precision? What are the two definitions of precision? Drawings Oblique, Isometric, 1-Point, 2-Point Perspectives -- and what makes them different from each other. Know your sketching lines - what is a (section line, construction line, object line, center line, hidden line), what they look like, and when each is used. Draw them on your cheat sheet. What happens when an Object line and a Hidden line fall on the same spot on a drawing? What happens when an Object line and a Centerpoint line fall on the same spot on a drawing? Multiview Drawings - know how to create a top view, front view, and right side view and how the items (cut in lines, hidden lines, holes, etc.) translate from one view to the next view. Dimensioning Rules for Multiview Drawings - know all of them and how to spot a dimension which is against the rules Measurements, Units, and Unit Conversions See the detailed Test #1 Review Sheet for this Know how to read a Metric ruler, US ruler, Dial-Caliper What are US units versus SI units (If I asked you what group Kilometers belonged to, could you answer correctly?) Know what a Mega is versus a Kilo or a Centi or a Milli. How many Milli’s in a Centi? How many bytes in a Megabyte? Know Spennato’s rules for estimation (applies to Metric measurements and Dial-Calipers) Units Conversion - see: Test #2 Review. Make sure you have conversion relationships in your cheat sheet; know how to properly apply a One Conversion Fraction Properties of Solids Use the review sheet provided for you before: Test #2 Review Areas, Surface areas, Volume, Mass, Density What does density mean and how do you calculate it?
