# Missionary Character of Mar Thoma Christians The Mar Thoma Christians are known by the name of their founder, Apostle Thomas. They value evangelism, primarily by example, and keeping faith among non-Christians. They avoid imposing their faith by force or violence, instead being respected in the community for their high moral standards. People of other religions also respected them. Mar Thoma missionaries were known for their faith-based lives. There is a historical account of missionaries from India traveling to China, noting that existing traditions and the tolerant attitude of Indian culture, as well as the caste system, may have weakened the evangelical activities of the Mar Thoma Christians. Missionary activities in India revived in the 16th century, but later historical events, including the influence of Western missionaries, made it hard to maintain the activities of the Syro-Malabar Church. Despite challenges, the Church continued with progressive growth, and many individuals from the Syro-Malabar Church became priests and helped as missionaries in Latin dioceses and Latin congregations. Mar Thoma Christians contributed financially to these efforts.
