# Instrument Terminology This document describes different types of words and phrases, methods of argumentation, and how to structure an argumentative text. ## Word Types * **Neologism:** A new word (neo = new / logo = word) * **Evidence:** Proof of an idea. * **Argument:** Justification of an idea. * **Thesis:** Defined information, accompanied by the argument. * **Acronym:** A word whose meaning lies in abbreviations (e.g., UFO = unidentified flying object). * **Compound Word:** A new word formed by combining existing words (e.g., Hispanic speaker = Spanish speaker). * **Derivation:** A word created with prefixes or suffixes (e.g., anti-hygienic). * **Parasynthesis:** A new term formed using multiple prefixes and/or suffixes (e.g., stone breaker). * **Data:** A fact, value or number; most data lacks specific information. ## Types of Arguments * **Authority:** Reliable and confirmed sources. * **Examples:** Demonstrations/illustrations of something specific. * **Personal Experience:** Statements narrated in first person, including events, successes, experiences, and anecdotes. ## Jargon * **Informal Language (Jerga):** Different ways of speaking depending on the group. * **Social Jargon:** Easy to understand, used by minorities. * **Professional Jargon:** Difficult to understand, more technical phrases used in work or professional settings. ## Constructing an Argumentative Text Following guidelines for writing an argumentative text: 1. **Introduction:** Introduce the subject and the thesis. 2. **Development:** Explain the arguments and thesis. Empathize with the reader. 3. **Conclusion:** Define the way the text stands on its own merit through the arguments. **Steps for Building an Argumentative Essay,** 1. **Introduction of the Topic & Thesis:** Articulating the central topic and the essay's position regarding it. 2. **Explanation of Arguments & Their Connection to Thesis:** Detailing the arguments and how they back up the thesis statement. 3. **Writing:** Construct the actual body of the essay. 4. **Error Checking:** Identify and correct mistakes in logic and writing. 5. **Publishing:** Presenting the final version of the essay. ## Other linguistic concepts * **Foreignism:** Words from other languages that have not been adopted. * **Loanword/Borrowing:** Words from other languages that have been adopted.
