# Drywall Construction Terminology This document describes different terms related to drywall construction. ## Adhesive * **Definition:** Glue or mastic compound used to attach drywall to framing or other drywall panels. ## Adhesive Nail-On Method * **Definition:** A method of applying adhesive to wood framing, complemented by nailing to improve bond strength. Adhesive can be applied continuously or in intermittent beads to the face of studs or joists. ## All-Purpose Compound * **Definition:** A pre-mixed gypsum compound used for taping and covering joints, fasteners (screws, nails, etc.). Also known as mud, spackle, or joint compound. ## Bedding * **Definition:** Installation of tape in the first application of joint cement. ## Beveled Edge * **Definition:** Drywall has two factory edges that are tapered (beveled). Placing two sheets together with these edges against each other creates a valley (recessed joint) which is filled during the taping and finishing process. ## Blister * **Definition:** A bubble in the wall caused by tape not being behind the joint compound or through drywall damage, leading the paper face to separate from the core. ## Bulkhead Ceiling * **Definition:** Bulkhead ceilings are decorative interior design features that protrude from the wall or main ceiling, frequently made of plasterboard. ## Bullnose * **Definition:** An alternative to the square corner bead for outside corners, having a rounded edge. ## Butt Joint * **Definition:** The joint resulting from the flat, non-beveled edges of two drywall sheets installed against each other. ## Caulking * **Definition:** Compound used to improve the acoustic performance of drywall construction by filling gaps around cutouts, runners, and perimeters of partitions and ceilings to prevent leaks. ## Channels * **Definition:** Three-sided U-shaped openings in sash or frames for holding lights or glass panels. ## Cut-outs * **Definition:** Notches cut from window perimeter members to clear or fit to an adjacent member. ## Control Joints * **Definition:** Notches cut from window perimeter members to clear or fit to an adjacent member.
