# Conspiracy of 1810 The armed uprising led by Hidalgo began in the Bajío region, a densely populated area of New Spain. The discontent of the criollos (people of Spanish descent born in the Americas) regarding the viceregal government escalated, leading to the 1810 conspiracy. They considered the deposed viceroy illegal. In 1809, in Valladolid (now Morelia), criollos conspired to remove Spanish authority and establish a self-governing criollo government under Ferdinand VII's name, aiming to secure indigenous support by promising to abolish tributes. Their plot was uncovered, but the viceroy, Archbishop Lizana, pardoned the leaders. Meanwhile, resentment continued. In 1810, a conspiracy developed in Querétaro involving Miguel Domínguez, his wife Josefa Ortiz, and Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the parish priest of Dolores. The conspiracy included military figures like Ignacio Allende and Juan Aldama. Hidalgo, a respected and educated person, recruited other individuals, including military men. They planned an uprising in December 1810, aiming for autonomous rule. However, their plan was uncovered on September 13th by Josefa Ortiz informing Juan Aldama. On September 15th, Aldama reached Dolores to warn Hidalgo and Allende. The uprising commenced on September 16th, a Sunday, and Hidalgo rallied people gathered at the church, encouraging them to fight against the government. The Spaniards, aided by the Audiencia, arrested Viceroy Iturrigaray after his perceived inclination towards the criollo perspective. This prompted the formation of additional conspiracy groups seeking greater political influence. The Querétaro conspiracy led by Hidalgo, Allende, and Aldama instigated the armed struggle on September 16, 1810, calling on the people to revolt.
