# Skull The skull is the skeletal framework protecting the brain and other structures. It's divided into two major categories: * **Neurocranium:** Encloses the brain. Further divided into: * **Calvaria (roof):** * **Basicranium (base):** * **Viscerocranium (facial bones):** More bones than the neurocranium. The total number of bones in the skull is 22. Craniometric points on the skull are important, such as the pterion (a specific, significant point). Sutures (immovable joints) connect the skull bones. In newborns, the bones are not fused, instead covered by cartilages called fontanelles. Notably, some skull bones are paired, and others are not.
