# INTRODUCCIÓN The endocrine system is a set of glands and organs that produce hormones and release them directly into the bloodstream. These include the hypothalamus, pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, thymus, adrenal glands, and pancreas, testicles, as well as the ovaries and the placenta (during pregnancy). The hypothalamus acts as a coordination center between the central nervous system and the endocrine system, integrating signals received from the rest of the brain and releasing the appropriate regulatory hormones to the pituitary gland. The anterior pituitary gland, by hypothalamic stimulation, releases: growth hormone, prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone which stimulates the thyroid gland, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone. The posterior pituitary gland stores and secretes hormones that are formed in the hypothalamus and transmitted by axons, such as vasopressin (antidiuretic) and oxytocin.
