# Bernoulli's Principle Bernoulli's principle states that an increase in the speed of a fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure or a decrease in the fluid's potential energy. ## How Wings Generate Lift * The wing is shaped to make air flow faster over the top of the wing than under the wing. * Faster moving air = less pressure. * The difference in pressure creates lift. ## Airfoil Diagram of an airfoil: * Shows airflow splitting at the front (or leading edge) of the wing. * Shows the upper airflow traveling a longer distance and converging with the lower airflow at the back (or trailing edge) of the wing. * Indicates "region of high pressure" on the lower surface of the wing. * Indicates "region of low pressure" on the upper surface of the wing. * Indicates "Lift" as an upward arrow. ## Examples * An airplane wing * A ship's sail
