Some forms will produce high carbon emissions and other will produce less. We have a responsibility to try and reduce the ‘carbon foot print’ within a dwelling. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. Many countries and homes are still relying on fossil fuels which damage the earth’s climate. As fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil run out, we need to find other ‘cleaner’ sources of energy. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. When burnt they produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour. CO2 is one of the most damaging greenhouse gases and is produced by power stations, boilers and fires. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. In other words once they have been used up, there is no more: Solid fuel: Coal, coke and peat Oils: Fuel oil and petrol Gases: Natural gas and LPG Electricity: Produced from non-renewable sources © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. They may use pumps, electronic valves, timers and programmers that use electricity. Some even require back up systems. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. These systems can be used for a single property or for district systems. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. Zero carbon producers are being used far more commonly now due to their green status. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. The greater the wind velocity the faster the blades turn therefore producing more electricity. The more common type is the horizontal axis generator, although there is also a vertical axis generator. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. There are many variations to harness the tide. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. This in turn rotates the blades to produce electricity. The head of water is either produced by a fast flowing river or more commonly by the use of a dam. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. These cells produce direct current (DC) power. This is converted into alternating current (AC) and is used to run domestic appliances. There are even PV farms in the UK. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. Governments have formed agreements to implement reduction plans. All this is to reduce global warming and the depletion of the earth’s ozone layer. As plumbers and electricians we have to make sure we play our part. New legislation is being introduced for us to follow when we are installing new systems. This is all to reduce carbon emissions. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. This thermostatic control ensures the heat source does not cycle or run when there is no demand for heat. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. Roof insulation prevents heat being lost through the loft area. Wall insulation prevents heat being lost through the walls. Pipe insulation prevents heat being lost to atmosphere. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. Compared to a Conventional light bulb, one of these bulbs only uses 30% of the Power, the other saves 30%. Both conserve energy. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. Nearly all new properties today are fitted with double glazing which has a far lower ‘U’ value than single glazing. The evacuated gap in between the glass panels acts as a layer of insulation. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. This means the installation of seals around doors and existing windows. All properties have a natural draught, which is necessary, but when the heat loss is too great then this will be an important step. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute. These are efficient appliances. © 2016 City and Guilds of London Institute.
