L E S S O N 8: M A T ER I A L A N D ECONOMICAL SELF M ARY ANN CAHANAP, RP M P S Y C H OL O G Y F A C U L T Y BODY MATERIAL POSSESSIOS FAMILY SELF FRIENDS WI LLI AM JAMES, A L S O KNOWN AS THE FATHER OF AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGY IDENTIFIED VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF THE EMPIRICAL SELF, ONE OF WHICH IS WHAT HE CALLED A MATERIAL SELF “ MATERIAL SELF” IS NOT ONLY CONSISTING OF HIS OWN BODY BUT ALSO INCLUDES THE DIFFERENT THINGS HE POSSESS FROM ONES FAMILY, FRIENDS, AS WELL AS THINGS SUCH AS, ONES CLOTHES, HOUSE, CARS, GADGETS, AND EVEN THE AMOUNT OF MONEY HE HAS IN THE BANK. WE REPRESENT OURSELVES THROUGH CLOTHES, THE GADGETS WE WEAR, THE FRIENDS WE HAVE AND THE THINGS THAT WE DO. ALL OF THESE CONTRIBUTE TO WHETHER WE ARE ACCEPTED OR NOT IN THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. WITH THIS IN MIND, THE CHOICES THAT WE MAKE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE RECOGNITION OF OTHERS DEPENDS NOT ONLY ON OUR OWN CAPABILITIES BUT MORE SO ON THE VALUE WE AND THE OTHER PEOPLE GIVE TO WHAT WE HAVE OR CAN ACQUIRE. THE NATURE OF MATERIALISM MATERIALISM CENTERS THAT ALL THAT IS FOUND IN THE UNIVERSE IS MATTER WHICH IS THE SUBSTANCE OF NATURE. HENCE, MATERIAL POSSESSION IS ALL THAT MATTERS MOST. SUCCESS, HAPPINESS, AND THE ESSENCE OF INDIVIDUAL EXISTENCE ARE GAUGED BY MATERIAL PROSPERITY WHICH ONE GAINED IN A LIFETIME. REASONS FOR MATERIALISM MATERIAL POSSESSIONS PROVIDE THESE INDIVIDUALS WITH AS THEIR MONEY AND PROPERTY; WEALTH GIVES THEM A AS THEY ALLEGED THAT THIS MATERIAL WEALTH PROVIDES THEM WITH HAPPINESS; MATERIAL WEALTH AS THEY BELIEVE THAT THEY POSSESS THOSE ASSETS THAT NOT EVERYBODY HAS; CHERISHED WEALTH PROVIDES AN INDIVIDUAL WITH THROUGH GREATER INTERACTION. THE CONCEPT OF SELF-GIFT THE IS THE PRIMARY OBJECT OF ONE’ S JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE. IT CONCERNS ONE’ S DESIRE TO WORK FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION AND GRATIFICATION. HOWEVER, THE ACT AND BEHAVIOR OF COLLECTING GOODS AND PROVIDING GIFTS TO THE SELF IS CONSIDERED AS MATERIALISM. THREE FACTORS DETERMINE THAT SELF-GIFTS ARE REVELATIONS OF MATERIALISM: MATERIALISM IS OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH SELF-CENTEREDNESS. MATERIALISTS DEFINE SUCCESS ACCORDING TO HOW MUCH WEALTH AND PROPERTY WAS ACQUIRED. MATERIALISTS BELIEVE THAT HAPPINESS RESULTS FROM THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BUYING AND CONSUMPTION. THE CORRELATES OF MATERIALISM 1. MATERIALISM AND HAPPINESS DO NOT GO WELL TOGETHER 2. MATERIALISM AND SELF-ESTEEM SHOW AN INVERTED RELATIONSHIP. 3.MATERIALISM AND FINANCIAL STABILITY SHOW AN INVERTED RELATIONSHIP. 4. MATERIALISM AND SELF-CONCEPT PROVE HOW INSECURITY MOTIVATES PEOPLE TO WORK HARD/WEALTH IS THEIR SECURITY. 5. MATERIALISM AND WELL BEING MANIFEST OPPOSITE RELATIONSHIP ACCORDI NG TO GREGOIRE ( 201 7) MAT ERIALI SM MAK ES PEOP LE UNHAPP Y 1. CONSUMERS CULTURE MAY BE HARMING INDIVIDUAL WELL-BEING 2.MATERIALISTIC VALUES ARE LINKED TO TYPE-A BEHAVIOR 3. MONEY CAN’ T REALLY BUY YOU HAPPINESS 4. MATERIALISM COULD RUIN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS 5. CONSUMER CULTURE MAY BREED NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITIES 6. CONSUMERISM IS FUELED BY INSECURITY THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS HOW DO WE REALLY EXPERIENCE HAPPINESS ABOUT WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE HAVE IN ITS GENUINE SENSE? HOW TO BE HAPPY 101: LEARN TO SHARE YOUR BLESSINGS NO MATTER HOW SIMPLE IT IS; IMPROVE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM BY ENGAGING IN WORTHWHILE ACTIVITIES; COMMUNICATE AND RELATE WITH PEOPLE AROUND YOU; BE GRATEFUL TO THOSE WHO COMPLIMENT YOU BY RETURNING THE FAVOR; LEARN TO LET GO OF THINGS THAT ARE NOT SIGNIFICANTLY NEEDED; MOVE FORWARD, ALWAYS.
