To trace the oldest civilization that developed in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China. Ancient Religion The religious beliefs of the Egyptians reflected the importance of nature in their lives. At the end of each day Ra was thought to die and sailed on his night voyage through the Underworld, leaving the Moon to light the world above. Why did the Ancient Egyptians build pyramids? The Egyptians believed that if the pharaoh's body could be mummified after death, the pharaoh would live forever. The tombs were designed to protect the buried Pharaoh's body and his belongings. Egyptians believed in afterlife, and that the soul could not enter into the future life without the body. Mummification – a method of embalming to preserve the bodies and keep them from decaying. PYRAMIDS Great Pyramid is the largest and most famous of the pyramids. It was built for the Pharaoh Khufu. It is over 140 meters high and took 20 years to build. What guards the pyramids? The Sphinx stands in front of all the pyramids in Giza. It has the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh.
