Weld Dimensional Training Material     Sidney Eargle CWI KION NA - Summerville, SC DEC 04, 2023 Measuring convex fillet weld • Identify the weld shape as convex • Slide the gage along the plate toward the weld. • If the gage hits the weld before resting flat on the other plate, the weld is good. − But don't forget about the 1/32" tolerance for up to 10% of the weld length. Measuring convex fillet weld • The hash mark is offset from butting end of gage by weld size, 3/16" • The hash mark can be used to evaluate weld size on other leg or Turn the gage 90° to measure other leg 3 Weld Dimensional Training Material Measuring concave fillet weld • That feature of a concave fillet weld limiting the maximum size of the inscribed triangle is the throat 4 Weld Dimensional Training Material Measuring concave fillet weld 5 Weld Dimensional Training Material Measuring concave fillet weld • Identify the weld shape as concave. • Leg size doesn't accurately describe weld size • Weld size determined by size of inscribed triangle (shown in green) • Weld size is the leg of the triangle that is fully contained in the weld. 6 Weld Dimensional Training Material Measuring Concave Fillet Weld • Gage for convex weld does not work with concave welds, because it only measures leg size • The gage for concave welds is designed to measure throat • If the weld is the proper size: − Extension in the middle will touch the weld before both sides touch the base metal 7 Weld Dimensional Training Material Practical fillet weld measurement and evaluation • Visually examine a fillet weld segment − Evaluate any apparent weld profile discontinuities − Determine whether convex or concave − Locate where in the fillet weld segment the weld size appears to be smallest 8 Weld Dimensional Training Material Practical fillet weld measurement and evaluation, cont. • Based on the apparent fillet weld profile and the specified size of the fillet weld, select the proper gage • Gage the region of the fillet weld that appears to be smallest − If this portion of the fillet weld segment is within 1/32" (half the gage increment) of the gage reference dimension, accept as the gage size − Acceptance criteria permits weld to be undersize by 1/32" or 1/16" (depending on specified weld size) for 10% of the weld length 9 Weld Dimensional Training Material Summary (1 of 3) • Measurement and evaluation of fillet weld size an important aspect of visual weld inspection • Important to realize that both fillet weld profile and size are important − In structures where fatigue is the dominant design criteria, fillet weld profile becomes more critical 10 Weld Dimensional Training Material Summary (2 of 3) • Fillet weld evaluation limited to observation of the weld face • Requires an assumption that the weld is completely fused at the root − Weld profile at least an approximate indicator of weld root conditions − Increased convexity is likely accompanied by incomplete root fusion 11 Weld Dimensional Training Material Summary (3 of 3) • Therefore, practical fillet weld inspection should include: − Use of fillet weld profile as the dominant evaluation characteristic − Application of some size tolerance when gaging the smallest portion of the weld − Especially for fillet welds with desirable profiles 12 Weld Dimensional Training Material Dimensional discontinuities • Weld lengths − If the welding symbol does not specify a weld length, the weld length shall be no less than the length of the joint − Drawings shall specify minimum weld lengths for welds shorter than the joint length and for intermittent fillet welds − Specified weld lengths shall be considered minimums. Intermittent fillet weld pitch distances shall be considered maximums. 13 Weld Dimensional Training Material Dimensional discontinuities • Component dimensional accuracy − Dimensions of finished component shall comply with drawing requirements • Shape imperfections − Weld profiles shall meet the minimum quality requirements as specified herein • Distortion 14 Weld Dimensional Training Material
