HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: FIRE SCENE OPERATIONS – 006 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Rural Water Supply Operations Revision: 4 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 1 PURPOSE Whenever fire suppression operations occur in non-hydrant areas, the following water supply tactics are to be considered based on the GPM requirements and the duration of these flows: POLICY A. The initial tank water supply of the first arriving apparatus is to be utilized. Flows will have to be judiciously evaluated in order to maintain both effectiveness and duration of the required flows to contain, if not totally extinguish, the fire. B. If additional water is needed, depending on the GPM flow requirements, the duration of these flows, and the size and capacity of the responding tender, the Incident Commander may use one or more of these water supply strategies: 1. Utilize a porta-tank carried on the first arriving tender and begin a drafting operation with a tender drafting from the porta-tank. 2. Position the tender in close proximity to the attack engine. The tender is to feed the attack engine using its initial water supply. If additional water is needed, the tender may be refilled by: i. Using additional apparatus and establishing a water shuttle operation to the closest fire hydrant. ii. Calling additional tenders using MABAS Box 5. 3. The report of a vehicle fire on the tollway will receive an automatic tender response. PROCEDURE DEFINITIONS EXCEPTIONS REFERENCE End of Document 1
