II December 8, 1869 Formal opening of Vatican I VATICAN I o First Vatican Council, also called Vatican I, (1869–70), 20th ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic Church o convoked by Pope Pius IX to deal with contemporary problems. The pope was referring to the rising influence of: rationalism anarchism Communism socialism Liberalism Ecumenical Council o a solemn assembly in the Roman Catholic Church, convoked and presided over by the pope and composed of cardinals, bishops, and certain other prelates whose decrees, when confirmed by the pope, become binding. Rationalism o the epistemological view that “regards reason as the chief source and test of knowledge” o or "any view appealing to reason as a source of knowledge or justification". o More formally, rationalism is defined as a methodology or a theory "in which the criterion of the truth is not sensory but Anarchism o a political philosophy and movement that is skeptical of authority and rejects all involuntary, coercive forms of hierarchy. o Anarchism calls for the abolition of the state which it holds to be Communism o (from Latin communis, 'common, universal') is a philosophical, social, political and economic ideology and movement whose ultimate goal is the establishment of a communist society, o namely a socioeconomic order structured upon the ideas of common ownership of the means of production Socialism o social and economic doctrine that calls for public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources.
