HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: SAFETY GUIDELINES – 005 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Inspection Guidelines for Protective Clothing Revision: 3 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2024 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE The following policy will help ensure all personnel are in possession of a complete set of protective clothing that is in serviceable condition, conduct regular inspections of assigned protective clothing, and to ensure the safety of the Fire Department personnel. DEFINITIONS The Fire Department shall use the following NFPA standards for the selection & care of protective clothing  NFPA 1971, Standard of Protective Clothing for Structural Fire Fighting, 1997 Edition,  NFPA 1851, Standard on Selection, Care, Maintenance of Structural Fire Fighting Protective Ensemble Elements, 2001 Edition, POLICY All personnel are to inspect their protective clothing on a daily basis at the start of their duty day. Company Officers will also inspect the protective clothing of personnel assigned to their company on a monthly basis. Quarterly inspections (routine and advanced) will require inspection forms be completed and submitted to division head. PROCEDURE During the month of September, the Division head of Protective Clothing or Shift Protective ClothingCoordinator will conduct an advanced inspection of all protective clothing assigned to line personnel, staff and Fire Prevention personnel. During the month of March, the Company Officer will conduct a routine inspection of all protective clothing assigned to line personnel. Protective clothing that will be inspected include: all items listed on the routine inspection form. The routine inspections completed by the Company Officers will address items listed on such form. 1 The advanced inspections completed by the Division head of Protective Clothing or Shift Protective Clothing Coordinator will address items on the advanced inspection form. Protective clothing found to be in need of repair will be addressed by the Protective Clothing Division or sent out for repairs. Complete a work order per SOG and send with clothing needing repair. Protective clothing will be replaced as necessary. The Protective Clothing Division head will maintain records of all inspections per NFPA standard. RESPONSIBILITIES Each member of the fire department is responsible for inspecting their protective clothing daily, as well as for the cleaning, care and maintenance of all issued protective equipment. Company Officers should evaluate the PPE of each company member on a continual basis. Daily, weekly, or monthly inspections do not require documentation unless a portion of the PPE ensemble is found to be in need of repair or replacement. Appropriate SOG should be referenced for proper repairs or replacement. The Battalion Chiefs are responsible for the administration of protective clothing inspections on their shifts. Protective clothing shall be washed as needed or determined by the Company Officer, the Division head of Protective Clothing, or the Shift Protective Clothing Coordinator and shall be performed a minimum of twice a year per NFPA standard. The Protective Clothing Division is responsible for management of the protective clothing, inspections and cleaning program. The Protective Clothing Division head is responsible for obtaining repairs or replacement items, when needed. EXCEPTIONS REFERENCE NFPA 1971 NFPA 1851 DEFINITIONS 2
