# Theories of Truth (Part 2) This document outlines two theories of truth: Correspondence and Coherence. ## 1. The Correspondence Theory of Truth * **Basic Idea:** A belief or statement is true if it corresponds to reality. If what we believe or say aligns with how things actually are, it's considered true. If not, it's false. * **Example:** If someone claims "the sky is blue", and upon looking outside, the sky is indeed blue, the statement is true. Conversely, if someone claims "pigs have wings", and upon checking, pigs don't have wings, the statement is false. * **Source of Knowledge:** Sense perception or experience. ## 2. The Coherence Theory of Truth * **Focus:** Consistency of statements within a system. A statement is true if it is logically consistent with other statements within the same system. * **Example:** Using a formula to solve a mathematical problem; the correctness of the solution relies on the coherence of calculations within the formula. * **Key Term:** Coherence - the quality of being logical and consistent.
