STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SECTION: 500.00 / HAZARDOUS MATERIALS Guideline: 504.00 Haz-Mat EMS Response Effective Date: 3-15-94 Revision Date: 1/2023 504.00 HAZ-MAT EMS RESPONSE The role of EMS in a hazardous materials incident will include those associated with basic or advanced life support treatment of patients of DFR personnel, who have been injured by or exposed to hazardous materials, with an added emphasis on precautions to guard against contamination, so as not to become victims as well. EMS personnel shall: Establish a triage area for the treatment of patients, if one has not previously been designated. Triage should be established in the cold zone, near the decontamination site, and situated so as not to interfere with its operations or accessibility. Take steps to prevent the contamination of their equipment, by covering exposed surfaces as needed. For more information, contact the Haz-Mat Sector Officer or Incident Commander on exposure problems. Wear protective clothing and safety equipment, as recommended by the Incident Commander or the Haz-Mat Sector Officer, when treating patients with suspected contamination. Do not enter the decontamination site, unless directed to do so by the Haz-Mat team member in charge of decontamination, or the Safety Officer. Secure information relating to material(s) involved from the Haz-Mat Sector Officer to include: name, symptoms of exposure, first aid treatment, etc. Provide basic and/or advanced life support care as required. Contact Biotel for further instructions relating to patient care. Advise receiving hospital of contaminated patients pending arrival to include: patient status, ETA, type and level of contamination, name of contaminant, and other information as required. Contact Incident Commander for instructions concerning decontamination of ambulance or equipment, prior to returning to service.
