Speed and Velocity What is speed? Speed is the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time. Speed (S) = Distance (d) Time (t) SI unit – m/s ✔km/h or kph d ✔m/min ✔mi/h s t Example: 1. Suppose you ran 2 m in 10 sec. What is your speed? Example: 2. A car travels 240 kilometers in 3 hours. What is the speed of the car during that time? What is velocity? Velocity is the speed of an object, but the direction is also included. It is calculated the same as speed, but you must include a direction in your answer. SI unit – m/s d v = velocity v t d = displacement tint = time interval Example: The bass boat was moving 12 m/s toward the north. d v t Indicate which of the following are velocities: 125 cm/sec NO 30 km/h northwest YES a. 350m/sec north YES b. 520 km/h NO Example: 1. A very slow man walks 0.2 m in 0.5 s east, what is his velocity? Example: 2. A car travels to the east at uniform velocity a displacement of 100 m in 4 seconds. What is the velocity of the car? Analyze and solve the following problems about speed and velocity. 1. A girl travels 20 miles on her bicycle. The trip takes 2 hours. What is her speed? 2. What is the velocity of a rocket that goes 700 km north in 25 seconds? 3. Bob rides his bicycle on a bike path that is 75 km long to get to his house that is due east of the bike path. If it takes Bob 15 hours, what is his velocity? 4. What is the speed of a rocket that travels 9000 meters in 12.12 seconds? Analyze and solve the following problems about speed, velocity, and acceleration. 1. A girl travels 20 miles on her bicycle. The trip takes 2 hours. What is its speed? s = 10 mi/hr 2. What is the speed of a rocket that travels 9000 meters in 12.12 seconds? s = 742.57 m/s 3. What is the velocity of a rocket that goes 700 km north in 25 seconds? v = 28 km/s, north 4. Bob rides his bicycle on a bike path that is 75 km long to get to his house that is due east of the bike path. If it takes Bob 15 hours, what is his velocity? v = 5 km, east 1. Suppose you ran 2 m in 10 sec. What is your Example: speed? GIVEN: d=2m t = 10 s FIND: speed (s) SOLUTION: S=d t S = 2 m_ 10 sec ANSWER: 0.2 m/s 2. A car travels 240 kilometers in 3 hours. What Example: is the speed of the car during that time? GIVEN: d = 240 km t = 3 hrs. FIND: speed (s) SOLUTION: S=d t S = 240 km_ 3 hrs. ANSWER: 80 km/hr 1. A very slow man walks 0.2 m in 0.5 s east, what Example: is his velocity? GIVEN: d = 0.2 m t = 0.5 s FIND: velocity (v) SOLUTION: v=d t v = 0.2 m_ 0.5 s ANSWER: 0.4 m/s, E 2. A car travels to the east at uniform velocity a displacement of 100 m in 4 seconds. What is the velocity of the Example: car? GIVEN: d = 100 m t=4s FIND: velocity (v) SOLUTION: v=d t v = 100 m_ 4s ANSWER: 25 m/s, E Thank you!
